Harry Dial sammelte 1920 erste Erfahrungen als Schlagzeuger in St. Louis bei Dewey Jackson,cite-ref-2[2] arbeitete um 1925 bei Lawrence Marablecite-ref-3[3] und dann ab Mitte der 1920er Jahre hauptsΓ€chlich mit Fats Waller (βDonβt Let It Bother Youβ) und Louis Armstrong, dem er in den 1930er Jahren auch als musikalischer Leiter diente. Dial nahm 1930 unter eigenem Namen sechs Plattenseiten fΓΌr Vocalion auf, als Harry Dialβs Blusicians mit dem HolzblΓ€ser Omer Simeon, dem Banjospieler Eursten Woodfork, dem Trompeter Shirley Clay und dem Altsaxophonisten Lester Boone.cite-ref-4[4]
Ab den 1940er Jahren war er Mitglied von Louis Jordans Band Tympany Five, in der er auch Maracas spielte. Ende des Jahrzehnts nahm er fΓΌr Decca Princeβs Boogie auf, auf der B-Seite eine der frΓΌhen Versionen von Diddy Wah Diddy. Im Bereich des Jazz wirkte Dial zwischen 1926 und 1965 bei 30 Aufnahmesessions mit;cite-ref-5[5], auΓer den Genannten bei Ella Fitzgerald und Junie Cobb. Mit dem Trompeter Zilner Randolph schrieb er fΓΌr Armstrong den Titel Don't Play Me Cheap, fΓΌr die SΓ€ngerin Bea Booze den Song Catchin' as Catch Can, den sie 1942 fΓΌr Decca einspielte. In den 1960er Jahren kam es zu einer Neuauflage seiner Blusicians mit dem Pianisten Jimmy Reynolds. In seinen spΓ€teren Jahren schrieb Dial die Autobiographie All This Jazz about Jazz.
Er ist nicht mit dem Blues- und Country-Gitarristen und Songwriter Harry Dial zu verwechseln.
